History Department at Young Irelanders Unveiling
News

On Friday 8th October, the History department were the guests of the Newry Young Irelander Memorial Society at the First Presbyterian Church.
The occasion was the unveiling of an oil painting by the artist Rodney Howes depicting the early days of two local Young Irelanders; John Mitchel and John Martin.
The students enjoyed lectures on John Mitchel and his connection to Newry. An additional lecture on the lesser known John Martin was particularly interesting. The speakers succeeded in giving an insight into the daily life and politics of Newry in the 1840s.
The audience were informed of the Society’s plans to raise a statue to John Martin to compliment the existing statue to Mitchel. In the shorter term there will be an exhibition at Mitchel’s home in Dromalane.
Afterwards we were treated to tea in the adjoining Church Hall.
The event was a great opportunity for the History department to strength our links with local history in the Newry area.

On a point of interest the original name of my GAA Club, Rathcline, Co. Longford was Honest John Martin’s. I would like to commemorate John Martin in the Clubhouse and I would be very grateful if there was a copy of a photo or painting which would be suitable for framing and put on display. This quest of mine is only at a particularly early stage so I would be very grateful for any information or assistance your dept. could furnish.
Thanking you for your attention and I look forward to hearing from you.
